Avner & Adi Gluscka
From Crafts to ArtThe workshop where Avner and Avi manufacture their cement tiles in a traditional way is located in Tel Aviv, created in 1922 by Avner’s father who arrived in Israel from his native Yemen at the age of 8. As a young adult, he began working as a labourer in the construction of the beautiful Bahaus buildings and other emblematic architectures of the time. He has witnessed the creation and design of quality products. A little history: it was the Knights Templar during the Crusades who brought their know-how to the company, which died out after their departure, Avner’s cement tiles are made one by one, the colours are natural oxides and are dried in the sun outside the workshop. Avi, his son and himself draw arabesques and also modern themes at the request of large houses and prestigious private clients such as the Rothschild family for example. What emerges from this visit is the joy and love of the work well done by the father and son who devote more than 10 hours a day to it, and Avner is an artist who paints and sculpts when his work gives him a few hours’ break. 80 years old he continues because for him, he tells me, it is a joy to see these wonderful tiles coming out of his hands.
